Dundee V&A designs to be exhibited

The design proposals for the landmark waterfront Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum at Dundee will go on show for the public next month.

Proposed waterfront site for the V&A at DundeeSix world-class architects from New York to Tokyo and Edinburgh are bidding to design the V&A outpost, which will be Scotland’s leading centre for design, and an exhibition will be held from 29 September to allow the public to provide their views on the models and design concepts.

The V&A at Dundee - Making it Happen exhibition will be held in the University of Abertay Dundee library from 29 September to 4 November 2010.

The six shortlisted companies were picked from more than 120 entries and the winning design will be chosen by the jury panel before the close of the exhibition. The shortlisted companies are:

•    Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (Vienna)
•    Kengo Kuma & Associates (Tokyo)
•    REX (New York)
•    Snøhetta (Oslo)
•    Steven Holl Architects (New York)
•    Sutherland Hussey Architects (Edinburgh)

Lesley Knox, chair of the jury panel, said: "This is another exciting step forward for the V&A at Dundee and it is a first chance for us all to see the potential shape and style of the building, as envisioned by six world-class design teams."

"We hope as many people as possible visit the exhibition and express their opinions on the various models and designs. The centre will occupy a prime site on the Waterfront, which must be one of the most dramatic settings in Scotland, and we intend to have a building which is worthy of the site."

The Dundee V&A is currently planned to open in 2014. A V&A at Blackpool is also in the pipeline as part of a partnership between the V&A, Blackpool Council and urban regeneration company ReBlackpool.

This development will provide the seaside town with an iconic building and facilities of a national significance in front of the famous Blackpool Tower.
