English Heritage focuses on education, education, education

Sandra Stancliffe has been appointed as English Heritage’s new Education Director.

Sandra Stancliffe has been appointed the new Education Director at English HeritageThe new position at the public body is a result of its latest five-year Education Strategy and Sandra will be driving a strategy that aims to make the local historic environment central to the experience of every school child in England.

She will drive a strategy that aims to ensure that every child of school age has the opportunity to visit an English Heritage property and make regular use of those that are on their doorstep.

On her challenge ahead, Sandra said: "In order for the historic environment to be used effectively in teaching and learning, and for its full potential to be exploited, the curriculum must be more locally relevant and put national events in a local context.

"English Heritage can work in partnership with Children and Young People's Services departments and school staff to do this."

Sandra joined English Heritage from Bristol Museums Galleries and Archives where she acted as the Learning Manager. Before Bristol Museums she spent three years working as Education Manager at Carlisle’s Tullie House Museum.

This month both children and adults are being offered free access to English Heritage properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee, as part of its regular Heritage Open Days.

England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event takes place between 9 September and 12 September. Last year it attracted more than one million visitors.
