The boss of the National Football Museum in Manchester, due to open this year, has spoken of his desire to turn the museum into a world beater.
In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, museum director Kevin Moore said that his team are very ambitious and want to win “lots of awards”. And by the looks of the Barclays Premier League at the moment, Manchester-based teams could be collecting a lot of silverware over the next few years.
The determined director said: "This is going to be the best football museum in the world, arguably the best sports museum in the world and one of the best museums in the country."
Apparently there's also a sign on the reception of his current offices that reads: "Space reserved for the European Museum of the Year Award 2013".
Commenting on the venue's broad appeal, Moore added: “Even if you hate football you will enjoy this museum. We put the game in its social and historical context. It uses football as a hook to understand who we are and what makes us tick.
"It's not a Disneyland version though. This is football in the round showing the negatives like hooliganism, racism and homophobia."
The museum is currently running a little behind schedule and although the exact opening date has yet to be released, Moore has said it will be open for the European Championships and for the London Olympics. A little hint that the opening date is getting closer is that the museum is now recruiting for two Front of House Supervisors.
Last year, we reported that Cheshire-based Mather & Co had been awarded the contract to design the re-launched museum.
