Transport showcased at Riverside Museum

Conservation storage, equipment and display specialist Conservation By Design (CXD) has supplied bespoke showcases worth over £1.3 million to the new Riverside Museum in Glasgow.

Dubbed Glasgow’s answer to the Guggenheim, the £74 million wave-shaped Riverside Museum, designed by acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid, is the new home of the city’s transport museum and opened on 21st June 2011. In the first three months since opening its launch, the museum has attracted more than 750,000 visitors.

The £3.3million contract has seen CXD supply over 70 individually designed showcases for the museum to house previously unseen exhibits. Displaying more than 3,000 objects – including the oldest surviving pedal cycle and the finest collection of Scottish-built cars in the world - the cases were designed specifically for the exhibition by design experts Event Communications, and aim to tell the story of transport by land and sea, with a unique Glaswegian flavour.

Paul Weston, Design Manager at Riverside Museum said: “The Riverside Museum is an ambitious project by Glasgow City Council and GlasgowLife to celebrate the transport heritage of Glasgow. Tailor-made to house a vast array of historic items of all shapes and sizes, the showcases offer visitors an unhampered view of the exhibits from all angles to enjoy them to the full. The finished displays look fantastic while keeping this unique collection protected for many decades to come.”

Kevin Boughen project sales manager for Conservation By Design, said: “The bespoke nature of the display cases means they are perfect to show the diverse range of items in the transport museum for future generations to enjoy. We’re sure thousands of visitors will enjoy learning about Scottish transport history when the museum opens its doors.”

Conservation By Design offer a wide range of showcases from leading European manufacturers.
